Even fraudulence and identity theft have become associated with net neutrality issues.
Two US senators claimed that their identities were stolen. Allegedly, they were among who provided fake net neutrality comments before the arguable vote to abolish net neutrality principles last year. The senators are now asking the credibility of the FCC regarding identity theft.
Democratic Sen. Jeff Merkley (OR) and Republican Sen. Pat Toomey sent Chairman Ajit Pai a letter on Monday. The letter requests the agency to distinguish and focus on treacherous demeanor in the lawgiving procedure. The senators stated that their identities were employed to create misleading remarks prior to the CRA vote.
According to the letter, “We need to prevent the deliberate misuse of Americans’ personal information and ensure that the FCC is working to protect against current and future vulnerabilities in its system.”
The IT workers of the agency even secretly worked with big advocacy organizations to guarantee that their opinions could be submitted in bulk without the server overloading. In Europe, particularly in Ireland, General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) will take effect on May 25 to counter identity theft and dissemination of personal information.
Last year, the FCC received 23 million comments through a form submission which are letters pre-written by activists. These are barely “signed up” before hitting “send” which is usual. The two lawmakers were among the approximated 2 million Americans whose identities were used to file remarks to the federal agency without their knowledge. It is no different from the case of Facebook and Cambridge Analytica that is facing lawsuit regarding the distribution of personal data without consent.
Identity theft has been a menace to most people especially Internet users. Everyone must know the reasons why personal details should be reinforced. The Decenternet platform knows that very well, and that’s what it does. It keeps the user’s personal information safe and discreet.
